About Qikelelani Soup Kitchen
Founded in 2025, Qikelelani Soup Kitchen was established with a heartfelt mission to combat poverty and hunger within vulnerable communities. Proudly sponsored by Mercor Group, the initiative was created to bring meaningful support, nourishment, and hope to those facing hardship.
Situated in the heart of rural Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, Qikelelani Soup Kitchen serves approximately 200 warm meals every Tuesday & Thursday to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. More than simply providing meals, the organisation is committed to restoring dignity, uplifting spirits, and strengthening the community through compassion, care, and human connection.
A key focus of Qikelelani Soup Kitchen is caring for the elderly and the sick, many of whom are often left at home alone while family members leave early for work and return late in the day. Understanding the challenges faced by these vulnerable individuals, the organisation goes beyond traditional soup kitchen services by hand-delivering warm meals directly to various households. This ensures that those who are unable to travel or prepare food for themselves still receive nourishment and support in the comfort of their homes.
The vision for Qikelelani Soup Kitchen began with Lynette Mbhele, who has a longstanding connection with the Mervis family and Mercor Group. Lynette worked as a domestic worker and as a cleaner at Mercor Group’s head office, dedicating more than 30 years to the family and the company. After retiring, she remained deeply passionate about helping those in need in her community.
Recognising the growing problem of hunger around her, she approached Clive Mervis with a heartfelt request for assistance in starting a soup kitchen. Moved by Lynette’s passion, compassion and determination to make a difference, Mercor Group supported her in bringing her vision to life. What began as Lynette’s heartfelt initiative has grown into the Qikelelani Soup Kitchen, providing nourishment, hope and support to community members facing hardship
The Challenge We Face
While Qikelelani Soup Kitchen has already made a meaningful difference in the lives of many, the reality is that hunger does not happen only twice a week.
Every Tuesday & Thursday, approximately 200 vulnerable individuals gather to receive a warm, nourishing meal — many uncertain of when their next meal will come. Qikelelani currently operates twice a week through the generous support of Mercor Group.
Although serving meals twice a week has brought hope and relief to many, Mercor Group believes two days of feeding is simply not enough. Hunger remains an ongoing struggle for countless sickly families in rural Verulam, and many community members continue to face days without food.
This is where you can make a difference.
